Passing the Torch: A Note from Former IAQA Board Member Derrick A. Denis, CIAQP, CAC, CIEC
I just returned from Long Beach, where I attended my final Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) Board of Directors (BOD) meeting as a director. My departure is due to reaching the end of the allowable term limit for this position. After three-successive terms spanning nine years, the reins have been passed.
It has been my privilege to serve as a member of the IAQA Board of Directors. I served the association in many roles during this time, e.g., 1st Vice President, Treasurer, Marketing Committee Chair, Chapter Relation Committee Chair, Futures Committee Chair, and more.
I was honored to contribute to many board accomplishments during my tenure, first as an ex-officio member, and later as a director. Most endeavors were accomplished without glitz, glamor or fanfare. Some accomplishments worthy of note:
- The Unification (ACAC formerly AmIAQC, IESO, IAQA).
- IAQA University.
- IAQA Tech Tips.
- IAQA Facebook page.
- IAQA LinkedIn page.
- IAQA Webinars.
- Repeated IAQA Annual Meetings successes.
- Continued domestic chapter successes.
- New domestic chapters.
- Development of international chapters.
- Signing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with many industry partners such as AIHA, RIA, IICRC, NADCA, and more.
- Wells Fargo IAQA merchant services discount program.
- Revising the Mission Statement.
- Adopting IAQA’s Pillars of Engagement.
- The creation and implementation of the IAQA Hall of Fame.
- White Paper: The Use of Negative Air Machines in Clearance Testing for Mold Remediation Projects (a.k.a the NAM White Paper).
- IAQ/IEQ Practitioner Body of Knowledge, a collaborative effort between IAQA & AIHA.
- IAQA Tech Tip videos.
- New IAQA website.
- Find A Pro feature.
- New IAQA logo.
- Finding ASHRAE.
- Surviving the Recession.
Being on the BOD can be rewarding, but rest assured it is not all unicorns and rainbows. Board members work diligently to benefit the organization. Most of the heavy lifting is behind the scenes. It is often difficult and thankless work, so I want to take a moment to thank the many members of the various iterations of the IAQA Board of Directors, with whom I was privileged to serve. These individuals have my gratitude and my friendship.

I have also been fortunate to work with IAQA’s professional staff. Often, the staff are the unsung heroes, who get the real work of the organization completed. Without them, we are unable to achieve our goals. They too deserve thanks and praise.
I am confident the current BOD team and our professional staff have the vision, the capabilities and the wherewithal to continue to propel IAQA towards an ever-brighter future.
If you want to become and IAQA contributor or yearn to be in a leadership role, there many opportunities to get involved. Learn how to get involved by visiting: http://www.iaqa.org/membership/get-involved/.
