Assessments Courses
Gathering Information
ASMT 101
Goal: Gather thorough information during IAQ assessments by asking crucial questions and reviewing key documents.
Lesson 1: Assessment Overview
Objective – Describe the 5 steps of a methodical IAQ assessment:
- Information Gathering
- Walk Through Inspection
- Indicator Measurements
- Sampling
- Conclusions & Recommendations
Lesson 2: Asking Questions
Objective – Know what questions to ask and how to ask them in order to gather thorough information for an IAQ assessment.
Lesson 3: Document Review
Objective – Cite the important documents that should be reviewed during an IAQ assessment.
Walk Through Inspections
ASMT 102
Goal- Enable students to make important observations indoors, outdoors, and in the HVAC system when performing IAQ assessments.
Lesson 1: Outside
Objective – Identify key problems related to the building enclosure, grading, roof drainage, and surrounding land use.
Lesson 2: Inside
Objective – Describe the areas to be inspected, and identify the sights, sounds, and odors that may indicate an indoor air quality problem.
Lesson 3: HVAC
Objective – Inspect the areas of the HVAC system that have an important impact on the indoor air quality.
Assessing Temperature and RH
ASMT 103
Goal: Understand how to confidently measure temperature and humidity, and interpret the results based on industry standards.
Lesson 1: Instrumentation
Objective – Differentiate between instruments that measure temperature and relative humidity, and determine which features are most important for the students needs.
Lesson 2: Guidance Documents
Objective – Apply ASHRAE Standard 55 and other guidance documents to establish if the temperature and humidity are within acceptable ranges.
Assessing Ventilation and Pressurization
ASMT 104
Goal: Understand how to assess whether the ventilation and/or pressurization is contributing to any indoor air quality problems.
Lesson 1: Assessing Ventilation
Objective – Measure the ventilation of a building and compare the values to industry standards.
Lesson 2: Measuring Pressurization
Objective – Identify the tools needed to qualitatively and quantitatively measure building and space pressurization.
Assessing Moisture
ASMT 105
Goal: Understand how to use equipment correctly to identify moisture sources and determine the extent of any moisture problems.
Lesson 1: Moisture Meters
Objective – Describe the different types of moisture meters and identify the surfaces which are best suited for each type.
Lesson 2: Thermal Infrared Cameras
Objective – Describe how thermal infrared cameras should (and shouldn’t) be used during a moisture assessment.
Lesson 3: Moisture Assessments
Objective – Find the source of moisture problems, characterize its quality, and determine the extent of damage.
Introduction to Sampling and Report Writing
ASMT 106
Goal: Understand the role that sampling plays in the assessment process. Another goal is to clearly communicate the assessment process through a written report.
Lesson 1: Intro to Sampling
Objective – Develop a hypothesis for IAQ problems based on your assessment, and establish a plan to test it.
Lesson 2: Intro to Report Writing
Objective – Summarize the assessment in written form, including conclusions and recommendations.
